‘Why Atiku visited Jonathan’
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, at the weekend, paid a courtesy visit on former President Goodluck Jonathan at his residence in Abuja.
Atiku had shared photos of the meeting on his social media platforms, describing it as “a pleasure catching up with former President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday evening, following his recent return from Guinea-Bissau.”
The meeting sparked speculations in political circles, as details were not made public.
However, Paul Ibe, media aide to the former Vice President, told Daily Trust that the visit had no political undertone.
He explained that Atiku’s visit was simply to check on Jonathan following the tense situation he encountered in Guinea-Bissau during the country’s recent election.
“The former Vice President visited former President Jonathan because of what happened while he was in Guinea-Bissau. Since then, they had not met, and he felt it was necessary to check up on him. There is nothing political about the meeting,” he said.
Jonathan’s spokesperson, Ikechukwu Eze, also said he was not privy to their discussion.
Jonathan was among African leaders trapped in Guinea-Bissau on November 26 following a coup in the West African country. He was part of a joint AU, ECOWAS and West African Elders Forum mission deployed to monitor the presidential election.
