Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, on Thursday, presented cheques to 47 families of deceased Edo State workers and awarded educational scholarships to one member from each family.
The ceremony, held at the Government House, Benin City, marks a milestone in the state’s implementation of the Group Life Insurance Scheme, in partnership with Tangerine Life Insurance.
Speaking at the event, Okpebholo emphasised the humanitarian purpose of the initiative.
“It is not just about insurance. It is about goodness. The important thing is that you receive your entitlements because of the painful loss you have suffered.
“Today, we are supporting you further by giving scholarships to one member of each family. This is our way of ensuring you are not left behind,” he said.
The governor commended Tangerine Life Insurance for their efficiency and partnership, noting that Edo State had become one of Nigeria’s leading states in pension and insurance reforms.
The Managing Director/CEO of Tangerine Life Insurance, Mr Kehinde Borisade, praised Okpebholo for transforming Edo State into a model of pension reform and workers’ welfare.
“In implementing the Pension and Insurance Acts, Edo State stands out as one of the leading states, if not the leading state.
“Your Excellency has shown rare leadership by caring not only for active workers, but also for the families of those who have passed on. Few states in Nigeria do this,” he said.
Borisade revealed that Tangerine Life had paid benefits to 47 families this year alone, totalling over N200 million, facilitated by the governor’s support.
