Bauchi plans sensitisation on new tax regime

The Bauchi State Government, through the State Trade Facilitation Centre, has concluded arrangements to begin a statewide awareness campaign on the Federal Government’s new tax regime, scheduled to take effect in January 2026.
The disclosure was made on Thursday by the centre’s coordinator, Dr. Bala Mahmud, during a courtesy visit to the Bauchi Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture.
Mahmud said the campaign, to be carried out in collaboration with key stakeholders, aims to educate the public and business community on the revised tax laws and their implications.
He explained that the initiative follows the amendment to four major tax Acts, assented to by President Bola Tinubu in June 2025, noting that the reforms introduce significant changes to tax administration in the country.
“The new tax regime comes with certain changes and modifications in existing tax laws.
Many taxpayers across the country have limited knowledge about how the Nigerian tax system works. Our goal is to bridge that gap and provide the public—especially the business community—with sufficient information on what the new system entails,” he said.
Mahmud added that while the business community remains a key target, the campaign will extend to the general public, noting that “everyone is a taxpayer,” either directly or indirectly through consumption taxes.
“We call on residents to participate actively in the sessions. Tax compliance becomes easier when citizens are well informed. In developed countries, people file their tax returns from the comfort of their homes. This level of efficiency is what we hope to entrench by working closely with the State Board of Internal Revenue,” he said.
Responding, BACCIMA Vice President, Bala Usman, described the planned campaign as timely and beneficial to businesses in Bauchi State.
“The tax reforms approved by the Federal Government come with benefits for individuals and businesses. Creating awareness is crucial so that people understand these advantages and can adjust accordingly,” he said.
