The contest for the throne of the Awujale of Ijebuland has continued to gather steam as ophthalmic surgeon and community leader, Otunba Adekunle Hassan, formally declared his interest before members of the Jadiara branch of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House in Ijebu Ode.
Hassan made his declaration at the historic Igboburo compound, where princes, princesses, chiefs and prominent figures in Ijebuland gathered to witness what many described as a strong bid for the revered stool.
The Awujale throne became vacant on July 13 following the passing of Oba Sikiru Adetona, who reigned for 65 years.
The event was attended by traditional and civic leaders, including the Aladeken of Oke Ako, Oba Adenola Osunsanmi, the Baagbimo of Ijebuland, Prof Fassy Yusuf, and the head of the Jadiara family, Prince Akinola Odedina.
Hassan told the gathering that he was offering himself to serve Ijebuland by building on the foundations laid by the late monarch.
He said his background in global medicine, institutional leadership and community service prepared him for the role.
He said, “I present myself for the highest royal stool in Ijebuland to consolidate the achievements of the immediate past Awujale and serve humanity.
“I believe I have the capacity, competence, character and contacts to bring transformational leadership, attract global partnerships and maintain the dignity of the throne.”
Hassan’s supporters describe him as a figure capable of blending heritage with modern governance.
His long relationship with the palace and his role within the Council of Otunbas were highlighted as part of his grassroots grounding.
With the ruling houses expected to begin formal deliberations, Hassan is regarded as one of the prominent contenders in what is anticipated to be a decisive moment for Ijebuland’s traditional leadership.
