Kano-Jigawa Customs records N93.9bn revenue, 583% FTZ growth in 2025
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Kano–Jigawa Area Command has recorded a major revenue rebound, generating N93.9 billion between January and October 2025, with the Kano Free Trade Zone alone posting a 583% increase in collections.
The figures were announced during the 2025 Comptroller-General of Customs Conference and Awards Night held in Kano, where stakeholders celebrated what they described as the command’s most outstanding performance in recent years.
Area Comptroller, Abubakar Dalhatu Zurmi, said the achievements marked a turnaround from initial resistance to his reforms when he assumed duty in February 2025.
“When I came in, my policies were unpopular, but today we are celebrating what collaboration, innovation and transparency have achieved,” he said, crediting CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi for backing the reforms.
According to the revenue report, collections rose from N85.3bn in 2024 to N93.9bn, while the Kano FTZ grew from N2.6bn to N17.7bn, driven by stricter oversight and improved compliance. Excise revenue also increased by 31%, rising from N5.7bn to N7bn.
The command also recorded major anti-smuggling breakthroughs, including the seizure of 428kg of pangolin scales worth N283m, over 519,000 Tramadol tablets, 1,430 cartons of banned Paraquat herbicide, 172 parcels of cannabis, vandalised power cables and smuggled exotic Persian cats. Several vehicles and 18 containers of improperly documented goods were also intercepted.
Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by Commissioner for Commerce, Shehu Wada Sagagi, commended the seizures—particularly of illicit drugs—and urged the comptroller to document his reforms “as a reference for future customs leaders.”
Zurmi, who is due to retire in January 2026, assured that the command’s structures would remain solid, saying, “Even in retirement, if I see smugglers, I will arrest them.”
Stakeholders, including traditional rulers, legislators and industry leaders, praised the command for improved transparency, enhanced revenue generation and strengthened cooperation with the business community.
