Senator Nenadi Usman, Nigeria’s first female National Chairman of a political party, has resumed office at the Labour Party (LP) National Secretariat in Abuja.
When our correspondent visited the secretariat early this morning, the premises bore a fresh outlook.
Billboards and banners of the former national chairman, Julius Abure, which previously dominated the complex, had been taken down and replaced with large images of Senator Usman, signaling a visible shift in authority following the recent court judgement that affirmed her leadership.
Party faithful and supporters were seen around the secretariat awaiting further developments as activities gradually picked up. The atmosphere, though calm, reflected a sense of anticipation over what many described as a defining moment for the party.
Senator Usman’s resumption comes days after the court ruling that settled the protracted leadership tussle within the party, paving the way for her to take full control of the party’s affairs. Though, the Abure faction of the party said to appeal the judgement.
The party has lost about 21 lawmakers in just 12 months, as senator Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee and Barrister Julius Abure-led leadership of the party became embroiled in a fierce supremacy battle for control of the party.
To further compound crisis, on December 31, 25, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, officially defected from the party and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
