50th anniversary: Family organises special prayers for Murtala Muhammed
Family members, clerics and dignitaries on Friday gathered in Kano to offer special prayers for former Head of State, Gen. Murtala Ramat Muhammed, as part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of his death.
The prayer session was organised by the Murtala Muhammed Foundation (MMF) at Masallacin Murtala, Hausawa, Zoo Road, Kano, where Qur’anic recitations and supplications were offered for the repose of the late leader’s soul.
The Chief Imam of the mosque, Sheikh Kabir Badamasi-Dantaura, led the Juma’at prayer and graveside observance, reciting verses from the Holy Qur’an in honour of the late general.
Speaking at the event, a son of the late Head of State, Malam Risqua Murtala Ramat, said the 50th anniversary provided an opportunity for reflection on his father’s legacy and the values he stood for.
According to him, the remembrance was also aimed at encouraging Nigerians to continue to celebrate the sacrifices of past leaders who contributed to nation-building.
“Fifty years after his death, he is still remembered for his service to the nation. It is important for present and future generations to understand the sacrifices made by our past leaders to build this country,” he said.
He noted that Gen. Muhammed was widely known for his stance against corruption and his commitment to integrity, fairness, justice and equity.
“Without these values, national progress will be difficult,” he added.
Also speaking, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Aminu Bashir Wali, described the late Muhammed as a leader with rare qualities, recalling his personal interactions with him.
Wali, who said he was among those close to the late Head of State, recounted witnessing the aftermath of his assassination in Lagos in 1976.
“He was a man of strong convictions who did not pursue material wealth. He died virtually penniless. His commitment to national service remains unmatched,” he said, praying for Allah’s forgiveness and eternal rest for the late leader.
In his remarks, the Sarkin Fadan Kano and Hakimin Fagge, Alhaji Ado Kurawa, a cousin of the late Muhammed, urged Muslims, particularly in Northern Nigeria, to continue praying for the late general.
He called on the faithful to recite Suratul Ikhlas daily for the repose of his soul.
An independent researcher, Ibrahim Ado Kurawa, said Gen. Muhammed left enduring legacies despite spending only about 200 days in office as Nigeria’s Head of State.
He listed some of his achievements to include the creation of additional states, the initiation of the relocation of Nigeria’s Federal Capital from Lagos to Abuja, and laying the foundation for the presidential system of government.
“Gen. Murtala Muhammed championed good governance and fought corruption, values that remain relevant to Nigeria’s socio-political development,” he said.
