Prudential Sports enrolls 1,000 Gombe retired athletes in Health Insurance Scheme
The Prudential Sports Limited has announced a sponsorship for the enrolment of over 1,000 Gombe retired athletes and their families in the Gombe State Contributory Healthcare (GoHealth) scheme.
The CEO of Prudential Sports Limited, Mallam Farouk Yarma, made the announcement at the second edition of Prudential Sports Football Awards ceremony which was held over the weekend in Gombe.
While presenting a N7.6 million cheque for the enrolment of the 1,000 retired athletes and their families into the GoHealth Insurance scheme, Yarma said the gesture of supporting sports development was borne out of the need to empower young talents while supporting those who are retired.
Yarma, who was a former Chairman of Gombe State Sports Commission, urged stakeholders to support grassroots talent development towards harnessing Nigeria’s talents for social and economic development of the country.
He, therefore, expressed hope that the awards and the gesture extended to retired and serving athletes would motivate the recipients to aspire for stardom in their chosen career.
Speaking during a panel session of the awards ceremony with a theme, “Celebrating Nigeria Sporting Legends: Honouring their Legacy, Inspiring the Next Generation of Champions,” former Nigerian sprinter and Olympian, Mary Onyali, called for investment in school sports to harness young athletes.
She said school sports remained the best tool for recruiting young athletes to represent Nigeria in international competition, recounting how she started her sport career from school.
Ms Onyali decried the poor attention given to school sports in recent times, stressing the need for massive investment in school sporting infrastructure to harness young talents.
The 1996 Olympic 200m bronze medallist urged governments at all levels and stakeholders to look inward towards discovering athletes from schools.
Nigerians can now invest ₦2.5 million on premium domains and profit about ₦17-₦25 million. All earnings paid in US Dollars. Rather than wonder, click here to find out how it works.
