6 die in Lagos boat mishap
Six passengers have died in a boat accident that occurred along the Nigerdock axis of the Igbologun water channel in Lagos.
The mishap, involving a Savvy Marine passenger boat, occurred at about 8:35 p.m. on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, while the vessel was en route from Ilashe Beach House.
The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) confirmed the accident in a joint statement issued on Wednesday and signed by LASWA’s Head of Public Affairs Unit, Wuraola Alake, and NIWA’s Head of Lagos Corporate Affairs Unit, Omowunmi Yussuff.
The authorities disclosed that four passengers were rescued alive and rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.
According to the statement, search and rescue teams were immediately deployed after a distress alert was received.
The response involved coordinated efforts by LASWA, NIWA, the Marine Police and other emergency responders.
“Sadly, six passengers were recovered dead at the scene, while four others were successfully rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention,” the statement said, adding that search and rescue operations were still ongoing to account for all persons involved in the incident.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the boat may have collided with a submerged object, although the authorities said further investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the mishap.
