Wike accuses Fubara of deal violation, says no going back on 2027 decision
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has accused Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, of reneging on a peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu to end the prolonged political crisis in the state, declaring that there would be no retreat from decisions already taken ahead of the 2027 elections.
Wike spoke on Wednesday at Tai Local Government Area during his ongoing thank-you tour of local government areas in Rivers State. He said the details of the agreement reached before the President would soon be made public, insisting that the governor had failed to honour key aspects of the deal.
President Tinubu had in June 2025 convened a meeting between Wike and Fubara in a bid to resolve the power struggle that engulfed Rivers State, culminating in the declaration of a state of emergency and the suspension of the governor and members of the State House of Assembly. Although both parties pledged to work together for peace after the meeting, the terms of the agreement were never disclosed.
According to Wike, the governor’s alleged actions since then amounted to a breach of trust. “After agreeing on something, you renege, and you think you are a smart politician? You are clever by half,” he said. “Very soon, Rivers people will know what we agreed before Mr President. This agreement was reached before Mr President, and if you can renege on it, then who are we?”
The former Rivers governor also told his supporters to prepare to “correct the mistake” of the 2023 elections in 2027, insisting that political loyalty and grassroots support, not money, would determine the outcome. “We are battle-ready. If they like, let them keep all the money. We have defeated people with money before, and we will do it again,” he said.
The crisis further escalated on Tuesday as members of the Rivers State House of Assembly rejected a N100,000 Christmas gift credited to their personal bank accounts on the directive of Governor Fubara. The lawmakers described the payment as unsolicited, unlawful and a violation of due process. In a statement signed by the Chairman of the House Committee ona Information, Petitions and Complaints, Enemi George, the Assembly said the funds were immediately returned. The statement accused the governor of persistently drawing from the state’s consolidated revenue fund without legislative approval since assuming office in 2023, in defiance of the Constitution and Supreme Court rulings. While civil servants reportedly received similar Christmas bonuses following due process, the lawmakers said the transfer to legislators bypassed constitutional requirements, further deepening mistrust between the executive and the legislature.
Later on Wednesday, Wike reiterated his position during another thank-you visit to Eleme Local Government Area, declaring that there was “no going back” on the decision to reclaim political power in Rivers State in 2027 and to support President Tinubu’s re-election bid.
“We are prepared. We have taken a decision and we are not going back. Nobody will intimidate us,” Wike said, adding that greed, ingratitude and the misuse of power often lead to political downfall.
