Man dies trying to retrieve gas cylinder from well in Kano
A young man, believed to be about 30 years old, has lost his life in Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State while trying to retrieve a burning gas cylinder from a well.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday by the agency’s Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi.
According to the statement, the incident occurred on Sunday evening at Saulawa Quarters in Gwarzo town, where the local fire service unit received an emergency call from a resident of the area, Alhaji Dan Gwarzo.
The statement explained that the deceased, identified as Ashahabu Ubale, entered the well in an attempt to recover a gas cylinder that had been thrown inside while it was still on fire.
However, while he was inside the well, the cylinder burst open and released a large quantity of gas, which reduced the oxygen level in the well and caused him to suffocate.
According to the statement, fire service officials brought the young man out of the well unconscious and rushed him to the hospital for emergency treatment, but unfortunately he was later confirmed dead by medical doctors.
Meanwhile, the agency also expressed concern over the increasing cases of drowning incidents recorded in the state, stating that recently, an 18-year-old, Yusif Malam-Gwani, drowned in a water pond at Bachirawa, Kwanar Madugu, in Ungogo Local Government Area.
The statement further stated that an eight-year-old boy, Abdussalam Ibrahim, lost his life after falling into a well at Kofar Yamma in Karaye town, Karaye Local Government Area.
It called on residents to exercise caution, be mindful of open water source and keep close watch on young children.
