‘I don’t know why I’m benched’, Salah pours out frustration at Liverpool
Mohamed Salah has expressed strong dissatisfaction with his recent omission from Liverpool’s starting lineup, following the club’s 3–3 Premier League draw against Leeds United on Saturday.
Salah, who has been left out of the starting XI for three consecutive league matches and did not feature in two of them, told journalists after the game that the situation has left him “disappointed” and questioning his role at the club.
The 33-year-old forward, who has scored 188 Premier League goals since joining Liverpool in 2017, said the recent decisions contrast sharply with assurances he received after signing a two-year contract extension in the summer.
“I can’t believe that I’m sitting on the bench for 90 minutes — the third time on the bench, I think for the first time in my career,” Salah said. “I’ve done so much for this club over the years. Now I’m sitting on the bench, and I don’t know why.”
Salah added that the developments have made him feel unfairly singled out during a difficult period for Liverpool, who have won only two of their last 10 league matches.
“It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus. That’s how I’m feeling. I think it’s clear that someone wanted me to take the blame. I got a lot of promises in the summer, and so far I’m on the bench for three games. I can’t say they kept their promise,” he said.
The Egyptian captain also hinted at a deterioration in his relationship with manager Jürgen Klopp, noting that the two are no longer in regular communication.
“I said many times that I had a good relationship with the manager, and all of a sudden we don’t have any relationship. I don’t know why, but it seems to me that someone doesn’t want me in the club,” he said.
Salah stressed that his commitment to Liverpool remains strong and revealed he had urged his family to attend the club’s upcoming home match against Brighton on December 13, despite uncertainty over whether he will play.
“This club — I always support it. My kids will always support it. I love the club so much. I don’t know what is going to happen now, but in my head I’m going to enjoy that game,” he said
With the Africa Cup of Nations approaching, Salah confirmed he expects to bid farewell to supporters before departing for international duty.
“I will be at Anfield to say goodbye to the fans before I go for the Africa Cup of Nations. I don’t know what is going to happen when I am there,” he said.
