Arsenal crush Leeds 4-0 to restore seven-point Premier League lead
Arsenal extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points after cruising to a 4–0 victory over Leeds United at Elland Road, ending a run of four league games without a win.
Mikel Arteta’s side moved seven points clear of title rivals Manchester City and Aston Villa, who are both in action on Sunday, as the Gunners took a significant step forward in the title race.
The result was a timely response after last weekend’s first home defeat of the season to Manchester United, which capped a run of just two points from a possible nine in Arsenal’s previous three league matches.
Having finished as runners-up for the past three seasons, questions had been raised over Arsenal’s mentality in decisive moments of a title challenge.
Arsenal were dealt an early setback when Bukayo Saka was injured in the warm-up, but his replacement, Noni Madueke, made an immediate impact in what proved to be only Leeds’ second defeat in 12 matches.
Madueke delivered the cross that allowed Martin Zubimendi to head Arsenal into the lead, before Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow could only parry another dangerous delivery from the winger into his own net before half-time.
Despite their strong recent form, Leeds remain just six points above the relegation zone, and their first home defeat since November was sealed when Viktor Gyökeres, who has faced criticism since his arrival, finished off Gabriel Martinelli’s cross for his 11th goal since joining from Sporting Lisbon.
Gabriel Jesus rounded off the rout with a blistering strike four minutes from time.
Arsenal will now hope local rivals Tottenham can dent Manchester City’s title push when they host Pep Guardiola’s side, while Aston Villa welcome Brentford. Chelsea could climb into the top four later if they continue their strong start under Liam Rosenior against West Ham at Stamford Bridge.
The victory leaves Arsenal seven points clear at the summit as the Premier League title race heads into a pivotal weekend.
