The Yobe State Government has honoured Mrs Gambo Lawan, a Junior Secondary School teacher who emerged as the North-East Best Performing Teacher at the 2026 Federal Ministry of Education National Teachers Award.
The Chairman of the Yobe State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Malam Umar Hassan Babayo, announced that the Board has awarded a tertiary scholarship to the award winner in recognition of her outstanding performance at the summit.
He explained that Mrs Lawan competed with her counterparts from 12 states across the federation and emerged the best in the North-East, returning home with several rewards and recognitions.
The SUBEB chairman said that although the award winner already holds a degree, the Board is willing to sponsor her further academic pursuits if she chooses to advance her educational qualifications.
According to him, the scholarship is aimed at encouraging her to improve professionally while also celebrating and recognising her for making Yobe State proud.
Earlier, Yagana Babagana, Desk Officer, Debate, Department of Schools and Academic Services, said Yobe State was represented by Malama Gambo Lawan from Government Day Junior Secondary School, Yerimaram, Potiskum Local Government Area, who presented an innovation on a Solar Cooker.
Babagana further said that before emerging as the winner, Mrs. Lawan and the other contestants conducted practical teaching sessions followed by rigorous questioning from members of the screening committee to assess their competence, subject mastery, pedagogy, and communication skills.
She also disclosed that Ogun State emerged as the overall winner, receiving a total prize of N50 million, while Yobe’s nominee and other awardees received N25 million each, alongside an additional pledge of N5 million from the Governor of Kebbi State.
In her remarks, the winner, Malama Gambo Lawan, said Yobe and Adamawa were the only states from the North-East that reached the national stage, where she eventually emerged as the regional winner.
