Kurmin Wali survivors undergo therapy
Eighty survivors of the January 18, 2026, attack on the Kurmin Wali community in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State are currently receiving psychosocial therapy and medical treatment at a government facility following their escape from bandits.
Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, visited the survivors on Wednesday, expressing relief over their safe return and assuring that efforts were ongoing to secure the return of the remaining victims.
“We are happy that they have returned home safely, and we are here to assure them that the remaining ones, by the grace of God, will also return safely. I have no doubt in my mind that they will be back,” the governor said.
He noted that the survivors had endured severe trauma and required both medical and psychological support.
Daily Trust observed that most of the survivors are minors, with a few teenagers among them. They are being treated at a government facility under the supervision of the Ministry of Social Services and Human Development.
Journalists were not allowed to speak with the victims during the visit.
The Kurmin Wali attack initially involved reports that 177 residents—women, children and men—were abducted by bandits about three weeks ago.
However, investigations later revealed that many of those believed to have been kidnapped had fled into nearby forests during the attack and survived by hiding in remote settlements.
The village head, Ishaku Dan’azumi, confirmed that 80 people had been located in different forest areas, while 86 others were still missing.
The incident initially sparked nationwide outrage amid early denials by state and local authorities before it was officially confirmed.
