The wife of former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and Founder of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, Toyin Saraki, has said many hospitals in Nigeria still lack access to clean water and basic hygiene facilities, exposing patients and health workers to serious risks.
Saraki disclosed this during a podcast session with Isra Chaer, shared on Instagram on Friday.
According to her, only 22 per cent of hospitals in the country have access to clean running water and soap, while just 12 per cent have such facilities in their delivery rooms.
She said, “And I was shocked to discover that only 22% of Nigerian hospitals had clean running water and soap, and of those, only 12% had clean running water and soap in the delivery room.
“So I started to understand why the midwives and nurses in Nigeria requested elbow-length gloves instead of the wrist-length gloves.
“And putting the two and two together, I realised that it was because they didn’t always have clean running water and soap in the delivery room to wash their hands between deliveries.”
Saraki noted that the lack of adequate water, sanitation and hygiene facilities continues to undermine infection prevention and the quality of maternal healthcare in many health facilities across the country.
