A pedestrian, identified as Jonah Gilla Angbaku, was killed by a motorist on Wednesday while attempting to cross a busy junction within the Abuja city center. The incident occurred at about 3:30 pm.
A witness, Ali Muhammad, said the deceased had alighted from a commercial vehicle under the Wuye junction bridge and was attempting to cross toward the NAFDAC junction when the accident happened.
“He was unfortunately knocked down by a speeding Mercedes-Benz SUV that dragged his body for several meters before he was left by the roadside,” Muhammad said.
He added that the driver initially appeared to be stopping, but then suddenly accelerated and sped away.
A police official at the scene, joined by several bystanders, disclosed that he had witnessed at least five similar incidents at that specific spot between last year and the present date.
