
Army Reaffirms Support for Families of Fallen Soldiers
The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of families of fallen soldiers, assuring that the sacrifices of troops who paid the supreme price in defence of the nation will never be forgotten.
The assurance was given by the Headquarters during special prayer sessions held at the 1 Division Central Mosque and Saint Peter’s Catholic Military Church, Ribadu Cantonment, Kaduna, as part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.
Speaking at the mosque prayer on behalf of the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 1 Division Nigerian Army, and Commander, Sector 1, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Sadiq Mohammed Wase, the Commander, 101 Equipment Support Engineer, Brig.-Gen. Muhammad Lawal, described the Remembrance Day as a solemn occasion for reflection, gratitude and renewed hope.
He said the Army remained resolute in supporting families of fallen heroes, stressing that their sacrifices in preserving Nigeria’s unity and territorial integrity would always be honoured.
Lawal urged serving personnel to remain steadfast and encouraged, noting that their sacrifices were recognised and deeply appreciated by the nation.
“The essence of this day is unity, remembrance and our enduring commitment to those who have served and those who continue to serve,” he said.
Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, also paid tribute to officers and men of the Armed Forces, particularly those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Represented by the Commissioner for Environment, Abubakar Buba, the governor expressed sympathy with the Nigerian military and families of fallen soldiers, praying for the peaceful repose of their souls. He also offered prayers for troops currently deployed across various theatres of operation, asking God to grant them protection, strength and victory.
Earlier, the Acting Staff Officer Grade Three (SO3), Islamic Affairs, 1 Division, Lt. Abdulmunin Muhammad, who led the prayers, said the commemoration was a reminder of the immense debt Nigerians owed fallen heroes, describing remembrance and prayers for them as a moral and religious obligation.
Meanwhile, a special inter-denominational church service was also held at Saint Peter’s Catholic Military Church, Ribadu Cantonment.
The service was attended by senior military officers, government officials and other dignitaries.
Speaking at the event, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Kaduna State, Dr. James Atung Kanyip, who represented Governor Sani, said the state government stood in solidarity with the Armed Forces in honouring their sacrifices.
Also speaking, the GOC, 1 Division, represented by the Chief of Staff, Brig.-Gen. Timothy Opurum, said the service reassured families of fallen heroes that their loved ones were remembered and celebrated.
In his sermon, the officiating Chaplain, Rev. Martins Awoyinka, urged continuous prayers for fallen and serving military personnel, noting that their sacrifices ensured peace and security across the country.
