
Newlywed arrested over alleged poisoning of husband in Jigawa
The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a newly married woman in Gauza village, Jahun Local Government Area of the state over the alleged poisoning and death of her husband.
The incident, according to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shiisu Lawan Adam Anipr, occurred on Thursday, January 23, 2026, at about 5.00 pm.
He said preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased had eaten a meal prepared by his wife at their residence before suddenly falling critically ill.
He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead while receiving medical attention.
Following the incident, detectives attached to the Jahun Divisional Police Headquarters commenced investigation, leading to the arrest of the wife as the prime suspect.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison.
She was also said to have admitted that she sent her cousin to purchase the substance used.
The suspect reportedly told investigators that she was forced into the marriage by her parents, a situation she claimed influenced her actions.
The Commissioner of Police has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for a thorough investigation.
The suspect will be charged to court after investigations are concluded.
Meanwhile, the police command has appealed to members of the public to remain calm and law abiding, and to seek lawful means of resolving family and marital disputes.
The command warned against taking the law into one’s hands, stressing that such actions often lead to irreversible consequences.
