Kwara Attack: 75 Buried As Death Toll Rises
At least 75 residents have been buried following a deadly attack on Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State.
Several other persons have been declared missing over the incident which has sent wave of shock across the country.
The Emir of Kaiama, Alhaji Muazu Omar, confirmed on Wednesday night that 75 bodies had been buried so far, adding that more residents were yet to be accounted for after the attack.
He said Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has already arrived in Kaiama to assess the situation and commiserate with affected families.
The Kwara State Police Command also confirmed the incident.
Police spokesperson, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the attack on the community began at about 6pm on Tuesday.
She said security agencies have since been deployed to the affected area, noting that the exact number of casualties is still being ascertained.
Ejire-Adeyemi added that reports of missing persons are currently under investigation.
Speaking after arriving in Kaiama on Wednesday night, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq confirmed that 75 residents were killed in what he described as a brutal attack by extremists.
The governor said the victims were targeted for resisting a perverted doctrine being preached by the attackers.
He described the incident as a cowardly expression of frustration by terrorist cells.
Addressing the Emir of Kaiama during a condolence visit, AbdulRazaq said, “We commiserate with you over the death of 75 of your subjects.
“These villagers abide by their Islamic faith and do not want any alteration. Because they refused to change their doctrine, they were attacked and massacred.
“It is different from what we used to see, where people are kidnapped or ransacked. This was a pure massacre, and it is truly condemnable.”
