Two Zamfara state lawmakers resign from APC
Two members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing internal divisions and alleged unfair leadership practices within the party.
The Minority Whip, Hon. Nura Dahiru Sabon Birnin Dan Ali, who represents Birnin Magaji Constituency, announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the state APC chairman, Tukur Danfulani.
The letter, titled “Notification of My Resignation from APC,” stated that his decision followed “extensive and careful consultation” with constituents and political associates.
He said persistent instability in the party and what he described as “overbearing and obnoxious interference” by the breakaway Jajiya faction had made it impossible to continue.
“The significant lack of fairness and justice in the party’s leadership ignited the need to seek a platform that aligns with the aspirations of my people,” he said. Also resigning was Hon. Shamsudeen Hassan Basko, who represents Talata Mafara North Constituency, the political base of former governor Abdulaziz Yari.
In his resignation letter, Hassan said he was stepping away after “careful reflection” on the internal crises, divisions and alleged sidelining within the party at both local and state levels.
“I have decided to step away from active participation in the party to pursue commitments that align with my personal and political convictions,” he wrote.
When contacted, the APC’s state publicity secretary, Malam Yusuf Idris, said the party had not officially received resignation letters from any lawmaker. “We are yet to officially receive their letters,” he said.
Reacting to the development, a suspended member of the assembly, Hon. Aliyu Ango Kagara, described the defections as acts driven by personal interest, noting that party switching had become a common feature of Nigerian politics.
