Disunity Could Scuttle Ijebu State Agitation, Gbenga Daniel Warns
Former Ogun State Governor and Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has warned against disunity among the people of the old Ijebu Province amid the growing push for the creation of a new Ijebu State.
Daniel, who sponsored the state creation bill at the National Assembly, made this known during the BATOGD Movement tour of Odogbolu Local Government Area.
He appealed to constituents to rally together in support of the state creation agenda.
Addressing traditional rulers, political leaders and supporters, Daniel stressed that the process of creating a new state is rigorous and can only succeed if the National Assembly perceives a clear and united front from those involved.
“The minimum and most critical requirement to achieve the creation of this state is unity of purpose. If the National Assembly cannot discern that unity among us, we cannot guarantee success.
“We must unite,” Daniel said.
The former governor hinted that consultations on the proposed name and capital of the new state are nearing completion, with Ijebu-Remo State emerging as the leading consensus option.
He warned that failure by stakeholders to reach agreement could result in external forces imposing decisions on the people.
“Let me inform you that we are on the verge of reaching a consensus on the name and the Capital of the State; Ijebu-Remo State. If we fail to decide for ourselves, especially on this consensus, other people will take those decisions for us.
“You will agree with me, that I don’t usually touch things that I cannot complete, and on this State creation project, I am fully committed”, he said.
Daniel also highlighted his past contributions to the development of Ijebuland during his tenure as governor, including the establishment of the Tai Solarin University of Education in Ijagun, the College of Education in Omu, among others.
While reaffirming his commitment to the state creation project, the senator said he would not have embarked on the initiative without confidence in its completion.
Daniel also urged residents to participate actively in the ongoing electronic registration of the All Progressives Congress (APC), encouraging them to register at their ward secretariats.
This, he said, would strengthen support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and his own bid for re-election.
The Odogbolu engagement marked the seventh in the BATOGD Movement tour since its launch on September 21, 2025, in Igode, Sagamu Local Government Area.
The BATOGD Movement, Daniel explained, is focused on accountability, grassroots engagement, and people-driven representation aimed at advancing development in Ogun East.
At the gathering, political leaders adopted President Bola Tinubu as presidential candidate and Daniel as the Senatorial candidate in Ogun East, ahead of 2027 election.
