Bayelsa PDP backs Diri’s autopsy order on late deputy

The Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party on Sunday said it agreed with the directive of Governor Douye Diri to conduct an autopsy on his late deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

Diri gave the order on Saturday during a condolence visit by former President Goodluck Jonathan to the Government House, Yenagoa.

The governor said the directive for an autopsy to medically determine the cause of Ewhrudjakpo’s death followed comments circulating on social media.

The state PDP Secretary, Mr Ebiye Ogoli, told PUNCH Online on Sunday that the party considered the governor’s directive reasonable and fully endorsed it.

Ogoli said the party was still in shock and pain over the sudden death of the deputy governor, whom he described as a close ally of the governor.

He added that Ewhrudjakpo was a major asset to the administration and prayed for the repose of his soul.

He said, “The State PDP aligns itself completely with the position of the state governor because, as you can see, we are in deep, terrible pains over the shocking, painful, unexpected demise of our dear deputy governor, who has been a big asset, one who worked so closely with the State’s Chief Executive.

“If, because of the pains he feels, he directs that an autopsy be carried out on him. We think it is reasonable and will gladly endorse that position.”

PUNCH Online had reported that Ewhrudjakpo slumped in his office at the Government House, Yenagoa, and was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit of the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, where he was later pronounced dead.
