Kano child murder case resumes
A Kano High Court yesterday resumed the trial of Hamisu Baita Dandago, charged with culpable homicide.
Prosecution counsel Barristers Ummi Lawan and Bello Isa informed the court that the state had concluded its evidence, while defense counsel Barrister Ogbobula presented the defendant as his witness.
The court also took testimony from the defendant’s brother, Sani Baita Dandago, who said the accused suffers from mental instability. When questioned on whether he made the same statement to the police, he said he was unsure.
He told the court he first learned of the incident through a phone call alleging that his brother had killed a neighbour’s child and was seen carrying the body.
The judge adjourned the matter to January 22, 2026, granting the defense leave to call a medical expert, and ordered the defendant’s remand in the correctional facility under officer Mahmud Datti Abubakar.
Hamisu Baita was first arraigned in 2023 for allegedly luring a child, Suyudi, to an abandoned structure in Sani Mai Nagge, where he was reportedly killed.
