Mutfwang mourns Imam who shielded Christians during Plateau attack
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has expressed sorrow over the passing of Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi, the Imam of Yelwa, Gindin Akwati in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of the state.
Abdullahi is widely known for saving the lives of more than 262 Christians in 2018 after he sheltered them in a mosque during a violent attack on the community, an act of courage and humanity that earned him national and international recognition.
In a condolence message by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, Governor Mutfwang described the late Imam as a man of purpose, whose life was distinguished by an unwavering commitment to peace, unity, and the protection of the vulnerable, particularly women and children.
Governor Mutfwang said the Imam’s courageous leadership in promoting harmony and safeguarding lives left a legacy worthy of emulation, noting that his actions brought honour not only to his community but to Plateau State and the nation at large.
“The death of Imam Abubakar Abdullahi is a monumental loss to his immediate family, his community and Plateau State at large.
“I commend the late cleric for his tireless advocacy for interfaith harmony, building bridges of forgiveness, compassion, and empathy among diverse communities across the state and beyond.
“The revered community leader dedicated his life to the advancement, development, and well-being of his people, and his sudden passing would leave a significant void in the leadership of Yelwa, Gindin Akwati, and Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
“I pray for God to raise leaders of integrity and wisdom to continue the legacy exemplified by the late Imam, as the loss comes at a time when the state greatly needed the guidance, wisdom, and unifying presence of the Imam,” the governor stated.
He urged the immediate family and the entire community to take solace in the knowledge that the late Imam lived a life of faith, compassion, and fairness, leaving behind a legacy of service and peaceful coexistence.
“On behalf of my family, the government, and the people of Plateau State, I therefore extend my deepest condolences to the family and all those mourning the loss, and I pray that Almighty God grants them comfort and strength to bear the painful loss,” he added.
