Police gun down 4 bandits in Benue
Police in Benue State have gunned down four suspected armed bandits during an attack on a checkpoint in Orokam community, Ogbadigbo Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Udeme Edet, said in a statement on Friday that operatives of the command attached to the Operation Zenda Joint Task Force (JTF), on Wednesday, repelled an armed attack on a police checkpoint in Orokam, during which four suspected bandits were killed.
She said the operatives also recovered firearms during the incident, which occurred at about 5:00 p.m. when officers on routine stop-and-search duty intercepted a black Golf 3 vehicle at the checkpoint.
Edet said the occupants of the vehicle resisted the search and, in an attempt to escape, two of the suspects brought out AK-47 rifles and opened fire on the officers.
The PPRO explained that the operatives responded, leading to a gun duel during which four of the suspects were neutralised, while one armed suspect escaped into a nearby bush.
She listed items recovered from the scene to include one AK-47 rifle, a magazine loaded with 15 rounds of live ammunition, the black Golf 3 vehicle, and items suspected to be assorted criminal charms.
The police spokesperson added that efforts were ongoing to track and arrest the fleeing suspect, while investigations had commenced to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The state Commissioner of Police, CP Ifeanyi Emenari, commended the officers for what he described as their gallantry and professionalism, and reassured residents of the command’s commitment to confronting armed criminality and protecting lives and property across the state.
Emenari further urged members of the public to remain law-abiding and continue to support the police with timely and credible information to enhance security operations.
