Taraba launches seed revolution as Kefas Flags Off Taraba Seeds Ltd
Taraba State Government, has set the stage for what many describe as a “seed revolution” in Nigeria’s agriculture with the unveiling of Taraba Seeds Limited, a company dedicated to transforming seed development and distribution nationwide.
The new firm is expected to boost food security, modernise farming practices, and expand access to certified, climate-resilient seeds for farmers across Nigeria. At the launch, Founding Chairman, Mr. Prasad Karumanchi, explained that the company will focus on multiplying, processing and distributing improved seed varieties tailored to Nigeria’s diverse agro-ecological zones. Crops such as rice, maize, cowpea and sorghum will take centre stage.
Taraba’s Commissioner for Agriculture, Prof. Nicholas Namessan, noted that beyond seed supply, the project will drive job creation, stimulate agribusiness investments and raise incomes for smallholder farmers. Agricultural experts have hailed the development as a timely intervention that bridges the gap between research institutions and farmers, ensuring scientific innovations translate into higher yields.
The Chairman of the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN), Honourable Tanko Bobbo, shared early success stories, revealing that adoption trials with Taraba Seeds Ltd. produced yields of 12 tonnes per hectare. “I call them miracle rice seeds,” he said.
CEO of Taraba Seeds Ltd., Dr. Dileepkumar Guntuku, stressed the company’s commitment to quality assurance and collaboration with research institutions, regulators and private sector partners to guarantee certified seeds ahead of planting seasons.
Governor Kefas described the launch as a transformative milestone for Taraba and Nigeria. “With Taraba Seeds Ltd., we are laying the groundwork for stronger harvests, improved livelihoods and greater national food resilience,” he said.
The unveiling of Taraba Seeds Ltd. signals more than just a state initiative—it positions Taraba as a hub of agricultural innovation and a key player in Nigeria’s quest for food security. With government backing, private sector leadership and farmer enthusiasm, the company is poised to redefine Nigeria’s agricultural future.
