Cross River: Bekwarra LG Chair Disowns Resignation Letter
The Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Council, Hon. Theresa Akwaji Ushie, has disclaimed a resignation letter circulating in her name, describing it as unauthorised and not issued by her.
In a statement, Ushie said she did not write, sign or approve any resignation letter addressed to the Secretary of the Council.
“I did not write, sign, authorise or approve the said letter. The document being circulated did not originate from me,” she said.
She maintained that she remains the duly elected and serving chairman of the local government council.
“I remain the Executive Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Council, and I am fully discharging my responsibilities,” Ushie added.
The chairman cautioned that any action taken on the basis of the purported letter would have no administrative or legal effect.
“For the avoidance of doubt, any action taken or contemplated on the basis of this document is invalid,” she said.
Ushie noted that the circulation of documents presented as hers, if unauthorised, could amount to offences under relevant provisions of Nigerian law, including sections of the Criminal Code Act and the Cybercrimes Act.
She said: “The applicable laws clearly prohibit the making or circulation of false documents and the impersonation of another person, whether through physical or electronic means.”
The council chairman directed all departments and officials to disregard the letter and reverse any steps taken as a result of it.
“I hereby direct that the said letter be completely disregarded and that any administrative action arising from it be immediately halted,” she said.
She added that the council may refer the matter to appropriate security and investigative agencies for further examination.
“The council reserves the right to report this issue to the relevant authorities for proper investigation,” Ushie stated.
Ushie said the clarification was necessary to avoid confusion and ensure stability within the council.
“This memorandum should be treated with urgency and circulated to ensure clarity and institutional stability,” she said.
