Kaduna extends free CNG bus scheme indefinitely

The Kaduna State Government has extended its free Compressed Natural Gas mass transit scheme indefinitely, citing its “overwhelming positive impact” on residents.

The state Commissioner for Information, Ahmed Maiyaki, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, saying Governor Uba Sani approved the extension after reviewing an assessment report on the scheme’s performance from July to November 2025.

Maiyaki said the 100 CNG-powered buses operating across 200 designated stops transported more than 1.4 million passengers within the five-month period, saving households an estimated ₦1.39bn in transport costs.

The commissioner said, “These are not just numbers. They represent school fees paid, food on the table, small businesses staying afloat, and thousands of our citizens moving daily without the burden of transport costs.”

He added that the scheme currently serves over 18,000 passengers daily, describing it as one of the state’s most impactful social intervention programmes.

According to him, the governor approved the indefinite extension after receiving feedback from commuters during recent field assessments.

The governor was quoted as saying, “The relief on the faces of our people and the gratitude in their voices remind us that leadership must always reduce the burdens of ordinary citizens.

“For this reason, I have approved the indefinite continuation of the Free CNG Mass Transit Scheme.”

Maiyaki said the administration remains committed to expanding safe, affordable and eco-friendly transportation as part of its human capital development agenda.
