Bayelsa United will host defending champions Remo Stars on Sunday (today) in a Nigeria Premier Football League matchday 17 fixture at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, with both sides separated by just two points on the table, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Remo Stars travel south, sitting ninth with 22 points, four places above Bayelsa United, who occupy 14th position on 20 points.

With the league approaching the midpoint of the season, the narrow gap between the teams adds extra significance to a contest that could shape their immediate ambitions.

The Prosperity Boys come into the game in search of stability after a difficult run that has yielded only two points from their last three matches.

Their most recent outing ended in a heavy 4–1 defeat, with Issa Yusuf scoring their lone goal, and defensive weaknesses have continued to undermine their efforts.

The home side will be eager to respond in front of their supporters and restore confidence.

Remo Stars, by contrast, arrive with renewed belief following a morale-boosting 2–1 victory over Enyimba in Abeokuta.

That result, secured by a brace from captain Victor Mbaoma, has reinforced the sense that the Sky Blue Stars are beginning to gather momentum after an inconsistent start to the campaign.

While they have collected three points from their last three matches, the manner of the win against one of the league’s traditional heavyweights has lifted expectations.

Recent history between the sides has been closely contested.

From seven previous league meetings, Remo Stars have won four while Bayelsa United have claimed three victories.

The hosts will take encouragement from last season’s encounter in Yenagoa, when they recorded a commanding 3–0 win, but Remo Stars are expected to view that result as added motivation.

A positive result would carry extra weight for the visitors, as a second away win of the season could lift them into the league’s top five and underline their intent to grab a continental ticket, while a victory for Bayelsa United would help ease pressure and pull them closer to the congested mid-table.

The match will be played in sombre circumstances following the death of the Bayelsa State Deputy Governor on Friday, December 11, 2025. The tragedy has cast a pall over the state, and while it may inspire emotional resolve from the home side, it also presents an additional challenge in maintaining focus.

Kick off is scheduled for 4pm, with Mohammed Chado appointed as referee, assisted by Julius Taykum and Ibrahim Boyi, while Chibuzor Stanley will serve as fourth official. With recent form favouring the visitors but local pride and urgency driving the hosts, the contest promises to be fiercely competitive in Yenagoa.
