Gov Sule clarifies decision to suspend mining activities
The Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has provided clarification on the decision to suspend mining activities during the recent Northern Governors Forum (NGF) meeting in Kaduna.
Gov Sule made the clarification on Monday in Lafia during the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting.
He said the suspension was not a total ban on mining operations for six months, but rather a suspension of new licensing pending verification of authentic miners.
He said, “The verification process aims to identify legitimate miners and eliminate illegal mining activities that generate no revenue for the state and create insecurity.”
The governor explained that the presence of illegal miners in the state had made the state a haven for bandits, kidnappers and other security threats, which was why the decision was taken to regulate the industry.
He assured that the suspension was not intended to deprive Nasarawa State and other states of revenue, but rather to ensure that mining activities were carried out in a safe and controlled manner.
