Propaganda not part of public relations – NIPR president
The President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Ike Neliaku, has tasked newly inducted members of the institute to avoid using propaganda as a tool while carrying out their public relations duties.
Speaking in Abuja over the weekend at the fourth quarter induction ceremony of 448 new members, he warned that public relations was not a spin, rather an ethical influence, strategic engagement and truth anchored on the power of narratives and persuasion.
He warned that they should never indulge in any form of propaganda trying to defend or communicate about anyone or issues, rather stick with the truth.
He warned that anyone who went against the ethics of the profession would be fished out and dealt with as the institute would never tolerate quacks in the profession. Neliaku also warned that silence was dangerous at a time when the nation was facing a lot of negatives internationally, hence that there was the need to speak up and correct narratives and misinformation as well.
Addressing the newly inductees as defenders of truth, he charged them to remain loyal to truth in the face of fake news, especially fact-based, ethical and responsible truth.
He called on them to become builders of trust, stating that, “Every message you craft, every campaign you manage, every stakeholder you engage must increase trust; not erode it.”
He urged them to be interpreters between the government and the people by listening to the government properly and helping the citizens understand the government.
