‘We don’t need to do mathematics’ – Chelle targets win against Uganda
Super Eagles’ Head Coach, Eric Chelle, has expressed confidence ahead of the last-group C match against Uganda billed to hold today at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Super Eagles secured victories in their first two group stage matches against Tanzania and Tunisia which has guaranteed them a spot in the knockout out stage.
Ahead of the last group match, Chelle, during the pre-match press conference described the clash against Uganda as dead rubber, saying it is devoid of mathematical calculation to qualify for the next round of the continental showpiece.
“We don’t need to do mathematics. We just need to project ourselves to the next round,” he said.
He explained that each group match serves a different purpose in his plan for progression.
“The first game was for intensity, the second for tactical choices, and the third is usually for mathematics,” he said.
Chelle gave a hint about his selection plan, saying he is determined to select the best team to ensure victories.
“This is not a good competition for eleven players to start all the games. Sometimes a player will only play five minutes, but in those five minutes he can bring victory — score the last goal.
He admitted that managing Nigeria brings immense pressure, but one he fully accepts.
“When I coached Mali, it was difficult because it was my country. With Nigeria, it’s another level. Every moment I feel the pressure and expectations from the country, the fans, and the players,” he said.
He also expressed confidence in striker Victor Osimhen, describing him as “the best striker in the world.”
“I wish a lot of goals from Victor. He feels good, he’s focused, and I think this AFCON will be better for him.”
The team’s captain Wilfred Ndidi said the team’s spirit is high after their last match but stressed that focus has shifted to Uganda.
“The atmosphere in the team is very good. The confidence from the last game is there, but that game is gone. Now, it’s all about the next one,” he said.
