Kano gov sympathises with residents as fire guts hospital

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has commiserated with residents of Rogo Local Government Area after a fire outbreak on Thursday destroyed parts of the Rogo General Hospital.

The governor’s condolence was issued on Friday in a statement by his spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa, who described the incident as “unfortunate and deeply saddening,” adding that hospitals are critical lifelines that must be protected from disruption.

The statement read, “His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, expresses his heartfelt sympathy to the people of Rogo over the fire incident that destroyed sections of the General Hospital.

“The government views this as a serious setback, especially to healthcare delivery in the area.”

Yusuf ordered an immediate assessment of the damage and directed officials to submit a comprehensive report without delay.

According to the statement, the governor also mandated the “full renovation and rehabilitation” of the affected parts of the hospital to ensure that medical services resume as quickly as possible.

He further reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure across the 44 local government areas of the state.

“He assures the people of Rogo that the government will take every necessary step to rebuild the damaged facility and enhance service delivery,” the statement added.

The Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, in a statement on Friday, said several offices and service sections of the hospital were destroyed by the fire.

According to him, the agency received a distress call at about 2:36 pm from one Abdullahi Ahmad Rifan, who reported that a section of the hospital was on fire.

“The director, Alhaji Sani Anas, immediately deployed men from the Karaye and Rogo fire stations, who arrived to find a one-storey building of about 400 by 400 feet engulfed,” Abdullahi said.

He noted that the affected areas included the Physiotherapy Clinic (CMO), an office under MEU, the Dental section, OPD, ACC/Card room, DOT office and the Laboratory office, all located on the ground floor.

Preliminary findings indicated that the inferno was triggered by an electrical spark, although the agency said a full investigation would still be carried out to determine the exact cause.

Abdullahi also warned residents to be cautious during the harmattan season.

“The director urges the public to exercise caution while using fire, most especially during this harmattan season, to prevent future recurrence of fire incidents and protect lives and property,” Abdullahi added.
