Kwara rep pushes bill to create new LGAs, boost security

A member of the House of Representatives, Raheem Ajuloopin, has proposed a bill to create additional Local Government Areas in Kwara State, saying the move will deepen grassroots governance and strengthen national security.

Ajuloopin, who represents the Ekiti/Irepodun/Isin/Oke-Ero Federal Constituency, disclosed this through a statement by his Special Assistant on New Media, Jamiu Balogun, made available to The PUNCH on Wednesday in Ilorin.

According to the lawmaker, the bill is part of his efforts to bring the government closer to the people, improve administrative efficiency and enhance development across communities in the state.

He explained that the proposal is one of two bills he recently sponsored at the National Assembly, the second being an amendment to the Private Guards Companies Act.

The amendment, he said, would enable licensed private security firms to play a more active role in security delivery, allowing security agencies such as the Police to focus more on criminal investigations, intelligence and prosecution.

“The creation of new LGAs would contribute significantly to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.

“Overstretched local councils often struggle to respond swiftly to security and governance needs, while smaller, localized councils would provide faster and more effective service delivery.

“Together, we will continue to pursue policies that promote development, security and good governance,” he said.

Kwara State has previously attempted to expand its local government structure.

In 2014, the state government inaugurated a 14-member committee to examine the feasibility of creating Local Council Development Areas, citing the state’s growing population, large land mass and administrative demands.

Before then, LCDAs reportedly created at the twilight of former Governor Mohammed Lawal’s administration in 2002 were scrapped by the succeeding administration of Dr. Bukola Saraki in 2003 due to what was described as funding constraints at the time.

With Kwara still operating the 16-LGA structure established under the 1976 local government reforms, Olawuyi’s bill, if passed, would reshape the governance landscape, creating more units of administration, expanding representation, and potentially improving security response at the grassroots.
