FCT: ‘This victory is gladdening’, PDP celebrates lone Gwagwalada win
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has celebrated its victory in Gwagwalada Area Council, saying though it expected more wins, the result is impressive.
Daily Trust had reported how PDP’s Mohammed Kasim polled 22,165 votes to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) Yahaya Shehu, who polled 17,788 votes.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted elections in the six area councils in the nation’s capital – AMAC, Bwari, Kwali, Abaji, Gwagwalada and Kuje.
As of the time of this report, only the report of Kuje was being expected.
The ruling APC emerged victorious in four but lost its control of Gwagwalada to the PDP.
Reacting to his party’s victory in the Area Council, National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Comrade Ini Ememobong, said, ”This victory, though less in number than we anticipated, is particularly gladdening because it is against the background of unprecedented intimidation, high-powered money politics and brazen executive brigandage. Reports and video evidence abound where armed security personnel were used to cart away result sheets in polling units, intimidate voters, and unduly influence the outcome of the elections”.
The party specifically congratulated the chairman-elect of Gwagwalada Area Council, Mohammed Kasim, as well as PDP councillors declared winners by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to the statement, the PDP has constituted a special legal team headed by its National Legal Adviser, Shafi Bara’u, to handle petitions arising from the elections. The party urged candidates with genuine grievances to immediately contact the legal adviser, warning that delays could be fatal to election petition cases.
The PDP also attributed what it described as “incredible voter apathy” during the polls to the Electoral Act 2026, claiming that many Nigerians had lost confidence in electoral outcomes conducted under the law.
It warned that the outcome of the FCT council polls could be a preview of the 2027 general elections if urgent reforms are not made, calling on the National Assembly and the President to take steps to “save the nation’s democracy from collapse.”
