Three weeks after the start of actions in the lower division, attention has now shifted to the Club Cricket Committee Premier League, the highest division of Nigeria’s cricket league, which bowled off last weekend with high-octane matches at the Tafawa Balewa Square Oval and the University of Lagos Cricket Oval, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
At the TBS Oval, reigning champions, Rising Stars began their title defence with a 31-run win over MRI Warriors.
Vishal Sharma delivered a Player of the Match performance for Rising Stars, leading their innings with 56 runs from 41 balls, including eight boundaries and one six.
The second Premier League game at the venue between Super Eagles Cricket Club and Island Titans Cricket Club was abandoned after a rain delay.
The UNILAG Oval witnessed the biggest win of the opening weekend, where Foundation Cricket Club welcomed the newly-promoted Rocks Cricket Club of Abeokuta to the top division with a 109-run thrashing.
After winning the toss and opting to bat, Foundation Cricket Club batters laid a solid foundation with high smashes and boundaries, with Yellow Greens new man, David Ankrah, leading the way with 86 runs off 29 balls, including seven boundaries and eight sixes.
Bright Nyong added 55 from 27 balls while Elijah Saturday also contributed 50 from 38 balls, propelling their team to 223 for the loss of four wickets in 20 overs.
Facing a daunting target, Rocks CC’s chase never really got going. The innings began shakily, losing early wickets and never recovering momentum.
They had a few decent contributions from but they were undone by the brilliant Foundation bowling as their innings ended 114 for five in 20 overs.
In the second game at UNILAG, Ibeju Lekki Cricket Club suffered a one-wicket defeat at the hands of Federal Government College Warri.
