The Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, Princess Opeyemi Bright, has said her entry into British politics is to serve the public, and not for recognition or position.
According to her, leadership is about humility, integrity, and accountability. It came with many early mornings and late nights as sacrifices.
Bright said this during her Mayoral Thanksgiving Service, which was graced by civic, political, and diplomatic leaders at The Master’s Sanctuary, Rush Green, Romford, on Sunday (November 30).
In a statement made available to Diaspora Tales on Thursday, among the mayors in attendance was Mayor Sunny Lambe of the London Borough of Southwark, of Nigerian descent.
“Being Mayor was never the goal; serving people was. The Thanksgiving Service is my way of declaring publicly that my leadership is an assignment from God, and my prayer is to be a light in this borough,” she said.
Bright, at the event, reaffirmed her commitment to her community, which included championing inclusion, empowering young people, strengthening partnerships, and leading with compassion.
“Let us continue to serve boldly. Let us give generously. Let us lead courageously, and let us shine our light, because light always dispels darkness,” she added.
