Gunmen abduct residents of Kogi community
Gunmen have invaded Jege community in Yagba East LGA of Kogi State and abducted a number of residents.
It was gathered that the attack occurred late on Monday night when the gunmen stormed the community, fired sporadically and in the confusion kidnapped several people.
“The atmosphere in Jege has been tense since morning. Many residents were abducted during the attack that happened late on Monday,” a resident of Ejuku, a neighbouring community, said on Tuesday, speaking on condition of anonymity.
“It is difficult to determine the number of victims at the moment. In the confusion, many people fled the area, and others are still leaving. We don’t yet know who escaped and who was taken,” the source added.
The President of the Jege Development Association (JDA), Oluomo JD Akogun, confirmed the incident in a statement posted on a community platform late Monday night.
He wrote: “Reports reaching me indicate that a Fulani settlement between Jege and Ejuku was attacked by bandits. Heavy gunshots were heard across Jege community, and some Fulani residents were reportedly kidnapped.”
Findings on Tuesday showed that panic had gripped the community, with residents making efforts to ascertain the safety of their relatives and loved ones.
Efforts to obtain information from the Kogi State Police Command were unsuccessful as the spokesperson, CSP William Aya, did not respond to calls or text messages.
Meanwhile, Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has announced the recovery of a cache of arms and ammunition from criminal hideouts during a joint security operation in the state.
Briefing journalists in Lokoja, the governor said the recovery followed over a week of sustained intelligence-driven surveillance by security agencies in collaboration with the state government.
He said the operation was intensified after a recent meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who urged him to redouble security efforts.
Ododo added that security agencies remained on high alert and called on residents to support them with credible information, assuring the public of the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
