Unimaid alumni inaugurate nat’l executive, unveil reform agenda
The University of Maiduguri Alumni Association has formally inaugurated its National Executive Council, with National President, Baba Shettima Kukawa, pledging to build a unified global alumni network driven by digital engagement, strong accountability and measurable impact.
Addressing alumni on Saturday in Abuja, Kukawa said the inauguration represents a turning point for the association, which was registered 14 years ago but had struggled with inconsistency and member apathy.
“For many years, our association has faced disengagement and questions about relevance. An alumni body without active alumni is a structure without substance,” he said, urging members worldwide to shift from passive membership to active ownership.
Kukawa outlined a reform agenda anchored on three pillars — Unity, Structure and Impact — aimed at repositioning the association as a coordinated global network.
He pledged to harmonise alumni databases, strengthen digital engagement and standardise governance across chapters.
He also promised measurable performance metrics, succession planning, strengthened chapters and institutionalised annual conferences to ensure credibility and accountability.
He said the alumni body would mobilise expertise and resources for scholarships, mentorship programmes, research endowments, industry partnerships and infrastructure support for the university.
Describing the University of Maiduguri as a symbol of resilience that has produced leaders across sectors, Kukawa challenged alumni to define the legacy they intend to leave behind.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, Prof. Mohammed Laminu Mele, who was represented by Prof. Shehu Mustapha Liberty, said the institution has produced distinguished men and women over the past five decades.
He expressed confidence that the newly inaugurated executive would reposition the alumni association for greater impact and deepen its support for the university’s continued growth and development.
The newly-inaugurated executive members are Baba Shettima Kukawa, President; Maimuna Abdullahi Wakawa, Vice President; Jamilu Musa Ja’afaru, Secretary; Dr Usman Abdullahi Usman, Financial Secretary; Engr Musa Ibrahim Musa, Publicity Secretary; Barr. Muazu Mohammed Dikwa, Legal Adviser, among others.
