Zoning not on our agenda now, ADC tells Obi

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has told former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to decide whether he wants to join its coalition, insisting that zoning is not currently a subject of discussion.

The party was reacting to comments credited to Obi suggesting that the ADC coalition was stalling because it had not resolved issues around zoning and other strategic considerations.

Daily Trust reports that the ADC recently attracted prominent political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai.

Speaking to Daily Trust, the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said Obi had earlier indicated interest in joining the coalition after the Anambra governorship election and should be the one to explain why he had not followed through.

“Nigerians are still waiting for us to show what we will do differently. Zoning or no zoning is not our focus at the moment,” Abdullahi said.

He added that while the party welcomed Obi, the coalition’s immediate priority was strengthening its structure and presenting itself as a credible alternative to Nigerians.

“When we get to the stage where zoning becomes a priority, we will take a decision. But if Obi’s participation depends solely on zoning, then he may have to wait until that point,” he said.

Abdullahi urged Obi to commit to the party’s growth, noting that leaders across other states were already contributing to building the ADC.

“We want him to be part of our journey. We want him to be part of building the party,” he added.
