A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in Benue State, Bemgba Iortyom, has faulted the Northern security arrangement, which groups 19 northern states into a joint regional security framework.
Under the arrangement, each participating northern state is expected to contribute N1 billion monthly to a regional security fund intended to support intelligence gathering, logistics, technology and community policing across the North.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, Iortyom said the initiative, which includes plans for state police, a temporary suspension of mining activities, and the creation of a Northern Security Trust Fund, does not reflect the specific security priorities of Benue state.
Iortyom argued that such resources should instead be deployed internally to strengthen Benue’s local security structures.
“Benue’s security challenges require home-grown solutions backed by direct investment in community policing, local government security response, and improved collaboration with federal security agencies,” he said.
He maintained that a state-specific approach would better address the concerns of rural communities that have been affected by insecurity over the years.
Iortyom also urged caution in the ongoing push for the creation of state police across the North, stating that the model must be implemented with clear legal frameworks, administrative structures and safeguards to ensure professionalism and accountability.
Commenting on the proposed six-month suspension of mining activities in the northern states, he said Benue should strengthen its internal regulatory mechanisms to ensure responsible mining practices.
He noted that a coordinated approach involving state institutions and local communities would produce better results for the solid minerals sector.
Iortyom further questioned the structure of the Northern Security Trust Fund, saying Benue citizens deserve clarity on how contributions would translate into direct security gains for the state.
“Before committing significant monthly resources, there must be clear governance and accountability structures, as well as measurable benefits for Benue,” he said.
He emphasised that Benue’s security needs are unique and should be addressed through policies developed within the state.
“A regional arrangement of this nature may not adequately reflect Benue’s specific realities. Our people must ensure that any step taken aligns with the long-term interests of the state,” Iortyom added.
He urged stakeholders to scrutinise the arrangement and insist that Benue’s resources and security decisions remain focused on the welfare of its citizens.
