EXCLUSIVE: Mother Cries Out As DSS Detains Son For Two Years Without Trial, Denies Family Access Despite Requests
The distraught mother, who is currently in Abuja seeking justice, said she has repeatedly written to the DSS headquarters, pleading to be allowed to see her son, but all her efforts have so far been ignored.
A Nigerian mother, Hauwa’u Abubakar, has cried out over the continued detention of her son, Adam Abubakar, by the Department of State Services (DSS) for about two years without trial, access to family, or formal charges, SaharaReporters has exclusively gathered.
According to multiple sources and documents obtained by SaharaReporters, Adam Abubakar was arrested by DSS operatives in Taraba State and secretly transferred to the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, where he has allegedly remained in detention without being taken before any court of law.
The distraught mother, who is currently in Abuja seeking justice, said she has repeatedly written to the DSS headquarters, pleading to be allowed to see her son, but all her efforts have so far been ignored.
A source who was previously detained by the DSS and later released told SaharaReporters that Adam Abubakar was his cellmate while in custody.
“This man whose mother is with me right now was my cellmate at Old Echo, Cell 9, at the DSS,” the source said.
“He was arrested in Taraba and has been with them for about two years now without being taken to court and without allowing the relatives to know about his arrest. When I was released, I went to the village where the mother lives and informed her. She’s currently in Abuja.”
The source further disclosed that while he was in detention, DSS officials accused Adam Abubakar of making “inciting statements” during one of the Jos crises, allegedly based on phone monitoring.
“While I was there, they said during one of the Jos crises his phone was monitored and he was making inciting statements,” the source added.
However, despite these allegations, Adam Abubakar has allegedly not been formally charged, arraigned, or allowed access to legal representation for nearly two years.
Mother’s Desperate Plea
In a letter dated January 26, 2026, and acknowledged by the DSS, obtained by SaharaReporters, Hauwa’u Abubakar formally appealed to the secret police to allow her see her son.
The letter read in part: “I am Hauwa’u Abubakar, the mother of Adam Abubakar who was arrested about two years ago without charging him to court.
“I got information from those released and compensated that my son is with you.
“Sir, you have shown compassion in your professional duties and I plead with you to kindly allow me see my son.
“I left Buruku in Kaduna State for Abuja and will be waiting for you to show compassion as you have always done to enable me see my son.”
Despite the acknowledgment of the letter by the DSS, no response was allegedly given, and no access was granted to the grieving mother.
Second Letter, Legal Threat
In a second letter dated February 3, 2026, also acknowledged by the DSS, Hauwa’u Abubakar escalated her plea, accusing the agency of kidnapping her son and violating his fundamental rights.
She wrote: “I write again to request for visitation of my son. This is the second letter I am writing because I am yet to hear from you.
“It is a violation of the rights of my son and by extension a violation of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for you to kidnap and detain a Nigerian citizen for about two years without charging him to court and without allowing his relatives and lawyers to see him.”
“My son Adam Abubakar was kidnapped from Taraba by your men and taken to the Headquarters in Abuja. If by next week I am denied access to him and he is not released, I will have no option than to sue the Service," she added.
