Resident doctors suspend strike

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its strike action scheduled for Monday, January 12, following the intervention of Vice President Kashim Shettima.

The doctors were pushing to commence the strike due to persistent unmet demands, including payment of promotion and salary arrears, resumption and timely completion of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) process, clear policy on skipping/entry level for chief executives, and failure to implement agreements, among other issues.

Daily Trust had earlier reported that the National Industrial Court sitting in Abuja restrained the association and two of its officials from embarking on any form of industrial action from January 12, 2026.

Justice E. D. Subilim granted the interim injunction in a suit marked NICN/ABJ/06/2026, filed by the Federal Government and the Attorney-General of the Federation against NARD.

Speaking with our correspondent via telephone, NARD President, Dr Mohammad Suleiman, disclosed that the decision to suspend the strike was reached after the vice president stepped into the matter and addressed some of the association’s demands.

“We have suspended the planned strike action for tomorrow because of the intervention of the vice president. The vice president called and entered the matter, and a few of our issues have been sorted out,” Suleiman said.

He added that the vice president requested additional time to resolve the remaining concerns, a request the association’s National Executive Council (NEC) agreed to.

“So, he has asked for more time to sort out the other issues, and the NEC has graciously given him the time,” he said.

Suleiman noted that further details would be communicated to members and the public in due course.

“A more detailed communication will come up. But the strike is not holding on Monday,” he said.
