
2 killed, 1 injured as gunmen attack Plateau community
At least two residents were shot dead by armed bandits in a renewed attack on Garga community, Garga district of Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State.
According to Iyan Garga, Alh. Usman Muhammed Danladi, a traditional ruler in the community, the bandits reportedly invaded the community on Monday evening, shooting sporadically, killing two and injuring one.
“Some bandits invaded our community this Monday evening. They were shooting sporadically, and people ran for their dear lives.
“The bandits shot three youths; one died instantly, another died later, and the remaining injured victim has been rushed to the hospital,” he said.
According to him, members of the local vigilante group pursued the attackers as they fled into the bush.
“It is now calm in the community. Our local vigilantes and community members have chased them away,” he added.
Ya’u Musa, another community member, explained that the attack has generated fear among residents, saying reports reached them that the bandits were regrouping to attack the village again.
This latest incident adds to a series of violent attacks that have plagued communities in Kanam in recent years.
Our correspondent reports that in 2023 and 2024, several villages, including Garga, among other villages, were attacked by armed groups, leading to the loss of more than 100 lives and the displacement of families.
Residents of various communities in Kanam LGA have repeatedly raised concerns over what they describe as persistent security breaches in the areas, calling on security agencies to intensify patrols and establish more permanent security posts to deter recurrent attacks.
