NELFUND sets up anti-corruption unit to boost transparency, accountability
Akintunde Sawyerr, managing director of NELFund
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has formally inaugurated and inducted its Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) as part of efforts to strengthen transparency, accountability and ethical governance across its operations.
In a statement signed on Monday by Omojola S-Oj, Director of Strategic Communications, the Fund said the inauguration marks a major milestone in its institutional development and underscores NELFUND’s commitment to building integrity-driven systems and enforcing zero tolerance for corrupt practices in the delivery of its mandate.
Akintunde Sawyerr, Managing Director/Chief Executive, in his remarks reaffirmed the management’s resolve to entrench robust internal controls and promote ethical conduct at all levels of the organisation.
Sawyerr said the establishment of the ACTU reflects NELFUND’s determination to operate transparently while ensuring public trust in its education financing programmes.
“The inauguration of the ACTU aligns with NELFUND’s vision of providing equitable access to education financing while upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and public trust.
“Management encourages all staff to cooperate fully with the ACTU and to continue conducting their duties with diligence, professionalism, and ethical responsibility,” the statement read.

Also speaking at the inauguration, Musa Adamu Aliyu, Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), commended NELFUND’s management and staff for successfully setting up the Unit.
Aliyu described the ACTU as a critical internal mechanism for identifying systemic weaknesses, promoting ethical standards and supporting compliance within Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
He emphasised that the Unit is designed to complement Management’s efforts rather than replace them, stressing the need for sustained institutional support to enable it to function effectively.
