Nigeria produces 624,103 tonnes of NPK fertiliser
Nigeria produced a total of 624,103 metric tonnes of NPK fertiliser in 2025, according to data released from the AfricaFertiliser initiative, a major source for fertiliser statistics and information in Africa and the International Fertiliser Development Centre (IFDC) and shared with Weekend Trust.
“As at first week in November 2025, about 624,103 MT of various NPK blends had been produced to supply Nigerian farmers,” according to the ‘Overview of NPK Fertiliser Blends Production Nigeria 2017-2025” working document.
The data also showed the current status of the blending activities across the six geopolitical zones of the country, including the various blends now available in the country.
According to the statistics, involvement in the production of NPK blends locally is still growing, and by the end of 2025, Nigeria had more than 90 blending plants, making it the leading blending hub in sub-Sahara Africa.
Apart from NPK, Nigeria produces granulated Urea locally through Notore Chemical Industries, Indorama Fertilisers & Chemicals (Onne, Rivers State) and Dangote Fertiliser Limited (Lagos).
However, in 2025, only a small share of domestically produced Urea supplied to the local market was used for NPK blending, largely due to the availability and preference for Granular Ammonium Sulphate (GAS). As a result, most locally produced Urea was applied directly by farmers as a top-dressing fertiliser.
“Fourteen blend types accounted for 98.5 per cent of total production, with NPK 20-10-10+S, NPK 20-10-5+S, and NPK 15-15-15+S recording the highest volumes,” the report noted.
Traditional and nontraditional blends
The fertliser outlook categorised the current NPK blending activities as traditional and nontraditional formulations.
Traditional blends refer to the five main NPK formulations blended with Urea and that have been widely used by farmers over the years: NPK 20-10-10, NPK 15-15- 15, NPK 20-10-5, NPK 27-13-13, and NPK 12-12-17 + 2MgO.
In contrast, nontraditional blends include all other NPK, NP, PK and NK formulations outside these five, and are mostly blended using Granular Ammonium Sulphate (GAS). The major importation and use of GAS for blending began in 2021.
The outlook noted that with the introduction of GAS into the blending industry, market dynamics are shifting as non-traditional blends increasingly dominate production.
“In 2025, about 86 per cent of NPK fertilisers were blended in the North-West and South-West regions, with the remaining regions accounting for 14 per cent of total output.
“The North-West dominated production, contributing about 64 per cent of national blends, largely due to its high concentration of blending plants.
“Kano (184,211 MT) and Kaduna (179,687 MT) led NPK blend production in the North-West region, while Lagos (141,292 MT) was the top producer in the South-West. Collectively, these three states accounted for 81 per cent of total blend production in 2025,” the report noted.
Before former President Buhari launched the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative (PFI), the importation of finished NPK fertilisers and blending raw materials was handled by the private sector.
However, beginning from 2017, the PFI encouraged more local manufacturing of NPK blends, which resulted in a decrease in NPK imports.
Foreign exchange limitations and a ban on finished NPK imports, which began in Q4 2018, further solidified this transformation, making NAICNPK a major importer of fertiliser raw materials for local blending.
The outlook highlighted that despite changes brought by COVID-19, the Russia-Ukraine crisis and global price volatility, imported raw material volumes and apparent consumption increased during 2019.
