Police probe killing of herder in Benue
The Benue State Police Command has launched an investigation into the killing of Hassan Suleiman, popularly known as Alhaji Fodar, a herder reportedly murdered by unknown gunmen in Otukpo Local Government Area.
State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Risku Muhammad, told journalists in Makurdi that Suleiman was killed on Friday in the Ondo-Ogobia community.
He alleged that herders who attempted to retrieve the body arrested a man armed with a local gun, but claimed the police released the suspect within three hours.
However, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Udeme Edet refuted the claim, saying no suspect was found at the scene.
She said the incident was reported on December 5, 2026, by one Alhaji Usman Amodu.
A joint security team visited the location and recovered the deceased’s body, which had a deep cut on the neck, alongside an abandoned motorcycle, she said.
Edet added that some mourners later pointed out individuals in the community as suspects, but their claims were based on emotion and lacked evidence. She urged the public to allow a proper investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ifeanyi Emenari, has transferred the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough probe and assured that all perpetrators will be brought to justice.
