Political economist, Pat Utomi, has called for the deployment of drones to monitor Nigeria’s highways as part of a broader strategy to curb insecurity across the country.
Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday, Utomi urged state governors to work together on coordinated surveillance, describing highway protection as “a fairly simple task” if prioritised.
He criticised what he described as the nation’s poor attitude towards tackling insecurity, questioning why securing major roads remained difficult despite the limited number of highways.
“There should be aerial surveillance, drones over those roads, because looking at the edges of the roads, whoever is inside the bush, they will see them long before anybody even tries to come out to the road to try and attack anybody,” he said.
Utomi also argued that traditional checkpoints were unnecessary, insisting that policing should be mobile and proactive.
“We should literally have rolling roadblocks: two, three police vehicles on this side and this side, a couple of metres apart, just moving,” he said, adding that multiple well-armed patrol teams moving in coordinated sweeps would offer better protection.
He noted that such joint, roving patrols, for instance between Benin and Ore, would deter attacks and create a continuous security presence on the highways.
