The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, on Monday said occupying the throne of a traditional ruler is more demanding than serving as a state governor.
In a press release titled ‘It is more difficult to be a monarch than be a governor,’ the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, spoke about the challenges of traditional rulership.
“Government has coercive powers, while monarchs do not,” the monarch said in the statement signed by his media aide, Adeola Oloko.
Ladoja, who governed Oyo State between 2003 and 2004 before his impeachment in 2006, stated this while receiving the Oniru of Iruland, Lagos, Oba Omogbolahan Lawal, at his Bodija residence in Ibadan.
He said that although government officials wield coercive powers and have clear funding structures, monarchs operate without such advantages despite the heavy expectations placed on them.
He added, “There is no definable pattern of funding for monarchs. There is an imperative to give constitutional roles for traditional rulers, given our closeness to the grassroots.
“The expectation of the people concerning the Olubadan stool is very high, with a very massive jurisdiction. This is why we think outside the box in order not to let our people down.”
Earlier, Oba Lawal, a former Lagos State commissioner, praised Ladoja’s leadership qualities and described the transition from public office to the throne as both exciting and challenging.
Those present during the visit included the Ekarun Balogun of Ibadanland, High Chief Sharafadeen Alli, and former Senate Leader and Agbaakin Olubadan, Teslim Folarin. The Oniru was accompanied by several chiefs and aides.
